About this Event
Join us for a fun and peaceful Protest event at Tesco and Sainsbury's to help us create public awareness on fundamental chicken welfare issues and urge these supermarkets to stop selling Frankenchickens. All you will need to do is come along, all materials and information will be provided. Afterwards there is will be an optional fun social at a nearby vegan cafe/restaurant. Everyone is welcome, we are a friendly and inclusive animal protection charity.
What is a Frankenchicken? This is the secret behind cheap chicken. Frankenchickens make up the vast majority of the 1 billion chickens raised and killed for meat every year. They are selectively bred to grow unnaturally big, unnaturally fast and they are slaughtered for meat at just 5-6 weeks old.
Chickens are the most farmed land animal in the UK, yet they are too often forgotten! The majority live short lives characterised by suffering. These ‘Frankenchickens’ are bred to grow so big and so fast that this results in many painful health problems and they often collapse under their own weight. Hundreds of UK companies, including Waitrose and M&S, have already committed to improving conditions for chickens but Tesco and Sainsbury's haven't yet. They now must also improve standards and stop forgetting about chickens.
The aim is for these supermarkets to stop selling Frankenchickens!
- What to expect
We will meet at 10.30am at the north entrance of Brockwell Park- please find the exact location here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/BDpESR9kH8x653jeA
At the meeting point we will discuss essential information about the protest and distribute materials amongst attendees. Then we will walk together to the nearby Sainsbury's (3 min walk) where for approximately 45min we will hold placards outside the store and hand out leaflets. We will then walk to the nearby Tesco Superstore (13min walk) and once again hold placards and hand out leaflets for another 30-45min. Afterwards we will head over to a vegan cafe (5min walk) for some food and/or drinks and some fun social time (En Root @ The Ritzy, Brixton).
Anyone is welcome to join for all or just part of the event.
We will be taking some photos and videos at this event that will be used to help promote this campaign.
- What to bring
Leaflets and placards will be provided so you do not need to bring anything with you but yourself.
Please dress suitably for the weather and bring water with you if you need it.
I would recommend you to dress comfortably and smart-casual avoiding clothing with any offensive messages or other charity branding to avoid confusion in photos.
We will head for some vegan food/drinks after if you would like to join us :)
