Since her debut album Another Mind (2003), internationally acclaimed pianist Hiromi has continuously evolved her sound, seamlessly blending jazz and classical influences with a masterful interplay of composition and improvisation. With her latest release, Sonicwonderland (October 6, 2023), Hiromi embarks on a bold new journey, showcasing her heaviest, funkiest sound to date. Describing the album as “a new journey of adventure,” Hiromi crafted a nine-song set with a carefully assembled quartet: bassist Hadrien Feraud, drummer Gene Coye, and trumpeter Adam O’Farrill.
The album’s genesis dates back to 2016, when Feraud’s performances with Hiromi inspired her to compose music tailored to his style. Coye’s organic, joyful drumming and O’Farrill’s rich trumpet tones completed the ensemble. Together, they bring Sonicwonderland to life, an album that expands Hiromi’s exploration of electronic timbres, featuring instruments like the Nord Lead A1 and Nord Electro 5D keyboards. Tracks like “Wanted” and “Go Go” reflect her signature blend of energy, complexity, and innovation, while “Reminiscence” highlights a collaboration with vocalist Oli Rockberger, a longtime friend and Berklee College of Music classmate.
Recorded in just three and a half days at Skywalker Sound Stage in California, Sonicwonderland captures the vibrant energy of live performance. The album’s cover art, created by Lou Beach, visually embodies the music’s dynamic spirit. A prolific artist with 12 studio albums to her name, Hiromi’s work has graced prestigious jazz festivals like Montreux and Monterey, and she performed at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony. Mentored by Chick Corea and Ahmad Jamal, Hiromi continues to captivate audiences worldwide, connecting with longtime fans and new listeners alike through her boundless creativity and virtuosity.
