Join Historian Richard Collins on July 8, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. for a stroll along the piers and parks of Port Credit, to hear the historic stories of bravery and sadness in this lakefront community.Port Credit is rich in marine history and our walking tours explore this fascinating part of our heritage.
The development of Mississauga’s “Village on the Lake” has always been linked to its waterfront. Settlers harvesting their grants inland sent rafts of lumber and grain downstream, where it was stored and then shipped to markets from Port Credit’s harbour.
The historic Stonehookers thrived in the later part of the 19th century lifting smooth, hard shale from the lake bottom for use as a sturdy building stone.
Port Credit was also a hubb for commercial fishermen. In the 1960s, the Port Credit harbour was a package freight terminal.
Today, the Port Credit parks and marina area are popular destinations for recreational boaters and sports anglers that continues to be developed to provide even greater opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy the coveted lakeside experience.
We will also look at the possible future of Port Credit’s precious waterfront.
The tour will begin at the Port Credit Farmers Market at 3 Elmwood Ave North.
Walking tours are free; we ask that you tip your tour guide!
