Pauline style and rhetoric with particular attention to his first letter to the Corinthians. - Robert KeayFor the past few decades many interpreters of Paul’s letters have given special attention to the literary qualities of his writing, particularly stylistic and rhetorical features. This is an important advance on earlier scholarship that regarded the letters as non-literary. However, much of this recent work is based on a mistaken view of the history of ancient rhetoric. Not recognising the wide variety of rhetorical schools and traditions in Paul’s world, these interpreters force Paul into an alien tradition and thereby distort his literary practices. The purpose of this paper is to identify a rhetorical tradition more in keeping with Paul’s practice and thereby to suggest a more illuminating rhetorical context for Paul’s letters.
