We're so jazzed about opening again, post-covid, bringing outstanding jazz artists to play in the beauty of the Palo Alto foothills beside the vineyard. Enjoy a picnic and a bottle of wine as we celebrate our 10th season!

For decades, Lyle Mays was the pianist with superstar jazz guitarist Pat Metheny and his life-long composing partner. Together, they created a sparkling new sound in jazz and packed in thousands of listeners each night for 3-hour concerts all around the world. This year, we lost Mays much too early, at age 66. In addition to his collaboration with Metheny, he released a series of records of his own compositions with jazz luminaries. In this concert, Mays’ collaborator and Bay-Area legend, saxophonist Paul McCandless, will collaborate with Charged Particles to bring Lyle’s music alive, in a tribute to the man who has often been lauded as a true genius of jazz.

McCandless has appeared on more than 200 albums and in concerts with such luminaries as Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Wynton Marsalis, Bela Fleck, Nguyen Le, Dave Samuels, Victor Wooten, Eberhard Weber, the Paul Winter Consort, Mark Isham, Steve Reich, Al Jarreau, Bruce Hornsby, Art Lande, Tony Furtado, and numerous jazz and pop artists, as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, other symphonies, and as a composer of music for films and live theater. As a leader, he released 30 records featuring his compositions with Oregon, and his solo records include "All the Mornings Bring," "Navigator," "Heresay," "Skylight," "Premonition,” “Isole,” and Shapeshifter.”

Heard on Yoshi's main stage performing with guitarist Nguyen Le, Charged Particles has been burning up stages throughout California since their relocation to the Bay Area following 20 years of music-making based in the Midwest.  Murray Low is a keyboard wizard with dazzling Latin-jazz technique and sparkling improvisational skills.  Aaron Germain is an inventive and sophisticated acoustic and electric bassist.  Along with fiery drummer Jon Krosnick, who performed recently with Chick Corea, these players are making some of the most electrifying jazz in the country today.

Charged Particles made its public debut on National Public Radio's live performance program, "Detroit Jazz Alive", and hundreds of performances since then have been at festivals and clubs around the country and internationally.  The group has released two CDs, “Charged Particles” and “Sparks”, the latter being named one of either “must-hear” jazz releases of the year, and a track from which appeared on a compilation CD produced by Jazziz Magazine.

Of the band, reviewers have said: “An electrifying, push-the-limits performance style... A tight and enormously talented trio.” (Jazz Times Magazine), "Charged Particles is definitely dazzling." (Jazz and Blues Report), "Fresh, energized contemporary jazz that showcases the trio's individual technical mastery as well as a cooperative, refined approach to the art form." (Jazz News Magazine), and "Tight interplay was the watchword as the threesome took difficult fusion themes and applied its own twists with spark and personal flair." (Los Angeles Times).

Music will run from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. We're open from 5:00 to 8:00. Picnic tables are not available; feel free to bring a blanket to spread on the ground, or beach chairs. We will pour tastes of our wines, and wine will also be available for purchase by the bottle. Please consider carpooling or bicycling, as parking is very limited.

The event is outdoors and will comply with covid restrictions then in effect.
