"For me, there was only one redeeming feature of growing up in Los Angeles in the 50s and 60s: That was a little folk club called the Ash Grove. There on a given night, I could sit at arms length from Lightnin' Hopkins, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, The New Lost City Ramblers, Merle Travis, and Doc Watson, and soak in their magic. The Ash Grove was a listening club where music wasn't simply wallpaper, it was the focus. Audiences sat in rapt attention because they felt the excitement of performers speaking to them through their music. In my turbulent teenage years, the Ash Grove was my school, my church, and my sanctuary.
Artichoke Music has graced Portland for 50 years now. From its beginnings in the NW to its longtime Hawthorne location to its present dwelling on Powell Blvd, Artichoke has been consistent in presenting the best acoustic music Portland has to offer in settings that are conducive to listening. When I attend an Artichoke concert as a performer or audience member, I sense the same ethic, feel a similar vibe to my early days at the Ash Grove.
Artichoke Music makes an important contribution to our community, in its education programs, youth outreach, and live acoustic music. I hope it will be around for a long time."
ABOUT PAUL CHASMAN --
Many lifetimes ago, Guitar Player magazine described Paul Chasman's music as "a fine example of a guitarist's devotion to the full exploration of his instrument's capabilities." That was before Paul developed a system for playing entire songs with harmonics; that was before he transcribed and recorded Prokofiev's 7th Piano Sonata on the guitar; that was before he was one of the founding members of the Acoustic Guitar Summit with whom he played for its first 9 years; that was before he became reincarnated as a singer/songwriter. Now, more than 50 years since he arrived in Portland with a guitar and a backpack, he's still creating, composing, and performing with virtuosic skill, ironic humor, deep musical background, and a rich history to share.
