250 years ago, on April 19th, 1775, the first battle of the American Revolution was fought in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. The "shot heard 'round the world" was certainly heard here in Salem, New Hampshire, where men like Seth Pattee Jr. took up arms in support of the new Patriot cause, and women like Susanna Pattee aided the war effort by procuring food, clothing, and supplies for the Continental Army. Seth and Susanna, both known for their sacrifices in the Revolution, once owned part of the hilltop now known as America's Stonehenge. Join us for a guided tour of the grounds and a discussion of Salem's involvement in the Revolutionary War through the eyes of the Pattee Family, their artifacts, and their story. This tour will take you through the property that was once the Pattee Family's wood lot, overlooking the Spicket River Valley where they also had a saw mill. Focusing on the 18th century history of Salem, you will learn about the founding of the town, its preparations for the Revolution, and its notable citizens' involvement in the conflict. You will also see the property where legend tells us Marquis de Lafayette, Hero of the Revolution, visited to personally pay his respects to the descendants of Seth and Susanna. The tour will end at the Main Site, where you may begin a self-guided tour of Salem's more ancient history.
This Living History Tour is included with regular admission. More information is available online at StonehengeUSA.com.
