Jazz guitar legend PAT METHENY to perform Saturday, October 16, 2021 in the Longworth-Anderson Series at beautiful, historic Memorial Hall.
It is one thing to attain popularity as a musician, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Pat Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years, Metheny has won countless polls as “Best Jazz Guitarist” and awards, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking, Letter from Home, and Secret Story. He has also won 20 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including “Best Rock Instrumental,” “Best Contemporary Jazz Recording,” “Best Jazz Instrumental Solo,” and “Best Instrumental Composition,” at one point winning seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included (along with Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, and Wes Montgomery) and its youngest member. Metheny has spent much of his life on tour, often doing more than 100 shows per year since becoming a bandleader in the '70s. At the time of this writing, he continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike, helping them reach their audience as well as realize their own artistic visions.
Metheny returns to the Longworth-Anderson Series with his new playing environment called “Side-Eye” for the 2021 season. He explains, “I wanted to create an ongoing setting to feature a rotating cast of new and upcoming musicians who have particularly caught my interest along the way.” Metheny continues, “From my earliest days in Kansas City onward, I was the beneficiary of so many older musicians giving me a platform to develop my thing through the prism of their experience and the particular demands of what their music implied. I have been feeling like I wanted to have a specific platform to focus on some of the many younger musicians I have enjoyed recently who I have felt some kind of a kinship with. I hear regularly from new players on the scene who have professed an influence from my records and tunes and I often invite them up to my house to play. Very often, it is really natural and organic to the music to play with them; they have literally grown up with it. I find myself inspired by how they deal with the musical challenges that come with the territory of some of those older tunes, and at the same time I find myself intrigued with the possibilities of what might be possible in writing new music just for them. This band setting is what that will be all about.” This edition of Side-Eye will feature James Francies (keyboards, piano) and Joe Dyson (drums).
