Join gifted artist and tutor Susan Penfold, as she takes you through pastel techniques and teaches you how to use this beautiful medium to create a stunning artwork.
This is a hands on workshop where the attendees will draw and learn about pastels, and techniques for creating artworks using pastels. You will create your own Midnight Oil artwork, of the old house near Burra South Australia.
This workshop is suitable for beginners.
The workshop covers;
- Doing a notan to get values correct (Notan (pronounced no-tan) is a Japanese term that means ‘light and dark harmony/balance.’ It’s a design concept that looks at how light and dark elements of a composition interact only using black and white. Notan is the underlying value structure of your painting.)
- Using the right paper
- Basic composition
- Use of colour
Please bring the following MATERIALS with you on the day.
A3 Board & clips to which to attach your paper if you have this, the paper is supplied, soft pastels (if you have any, if not the use of pastels on the day will be facilitated).
About the artist:
Susan Penfold started drawing with pastels in 2016.
Over the next few years, she kept improving her skills while working full time, and in 2020 she held her first solo exhibition at Darwin Visual Arts. During this year she won the Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival Jetty Art prize and received a highly commended in the Katherine Art Show. She subsequently held solo exhibitions at Dom’s Bar and was invited to exhibit at Songlines Gallery in Darwin, Northern Territory.
In 2022 to she moved to Adelaide, South Australia, and became part time carer for her elderly parents and started setting up her studio to become a full-time artist.
In 2023 she received a Merit Award at the Spring Exhibition for the Royal South Australian Society for the Arts and in the first year she entered, won the Non-Professional Award at Plein Air Down Under, an outdoor painting festival held in Western Australia.
Susan has been subsequently invited to exhibit at the Spirit of the Landscape exhibition. In 2024 she exhibited and tutored at the Barossa Arts Festival.
Susan enjoys painting landscapes, still life and human and pet portraits which range in style from contemporary to impressionist and realistic.
