Supporting staff in developing a consistent, effective and acceptable team approach to managing behaviour.
About this Event

PIPS training is aimed at all staff working in Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, Special Schools and Alternative Provisions.

It aims to support staff in developing a consistent, effective and acceptable team approach to managing behaviour, while, crucially, maintaining positive relationships and minimising risk for all.

Module 1: Prevention and De-escalation

This explores the key issues surrounding challenging behaviour and emphasises the importance of positive, preventative verbal and non-verbal de-escalation strategies.

This module includes work on:

- Values

- The Emotional Impact of Challenging Behaviour

- Help Protocol

- The Prevention Continuum

- Positive Prevention Strategies/Strategies to Avoid

- Systems and Structures in School

- Individual Behaviour Care Plans

Module 2: Passive Intervention and Prevention

This promotes the least intrusive, most caring handling strategies and explores a continuum of passive techniques designed to keep both pupils and staff as safe as possible based on “making movement safe” rather than “overpowering”.

This module includes:

- Legislation and Guidance

- Reporting and Recording

- Principles Underpinning Passive Intervention

- Moments of Crisis

- Personal Space

- Following Movement

- Guiding and Escorting

- Standing, Sitting, Kneeling

Expected Outcomes from the Two Modules:

- experience and practice the skills of guiding, safe touch and holding

- explore how these acts of care combine with calming, diffusing and problem solving strategies

- experience passive intervention strategies designed to follow rather than force movement

- identify key elements for developing a consistent team approach to managing challenge

- improve knowledge and understanding around Risk Assessment

- increase awareness of the importance of recording and reporting, monitoring and evaluating

- provide a process of repair and reflection for both staff and children

- develop an increased sense of confidence at times of crisis

Eligibility

If your school has not received PIPs training before, please ensure the SENDCo or a member of SLT also attends. It would be wrong for TAs and Teachers to attend without these provisos.

If your school has some staff (including a member of SLT) who are already trained and you want to train someone else who has never done PIPS training before, the new member needs to attend the whole day.

If a member of staff has already done module 1 and 2 in the past three years, they can attend just module 2 as a refresher. It is recommended to update module 2 every 2-3 years.
