This workshop is for any organisation who is engaging with Pasifika peoples and will be delivered by AvaNiu Pasifika (AvaNiu) across two sessions (5 hours total training).
Session 1: 24 July 2024, 1.30 - 4.30pm
INTRODUCTION MODULE
This module is the foundation for understanding the history of Pasifika in Aotearoa NZ and unpacking personal assumptions and biases. In doing so, it’s intended that a broader awareness and understanding of Pacific populations’ values and experiences are established, thus leading to more meaningful and empathetic approaches to individual/family engagement, service design and delivery.
Session 2: 7 August 2024, 1.30 - 3.30pm
ENGAGING PASIFIKA COMMUNTITIES MODULE
This module supports and builds on the Introduction module by understanding the key principles and approaches to engaging with Pasifika groups/communities and organisations. Awareness is developed around the impact of sharing and holding space correctly while working with Pacific groups and how the unconscious power dynamic can greatly influence outcomes and continued service engagement.
Training costs for not-for-profit organisations subsidised thanks to funding from TECT and BayTrust.
The workshops will be facilitated and presented by AvaNiu Pasifika.
Established in 2016 to address the inequities in service access and engagement among Pasifika living in the Bay of Plenty, AvaNiu has supported countless Tongan, Samoan, Niuean, Kiribati, Fijian, Tuvaluan and other Pacific and non-Pacific family groups to identify and achieve wellness and wellbeing through its services.
Through partnerships and community-based relationships, AvaNiu continues to deliver its services from Katikati to Te Puke, and everywhere in between. Some of the key services AvaNiu currently delivers are:
▪ Early Childhood Education support and transition to school.
▪ Teacher professional development to enhance their understanding of Pacific children’s
and families’ needs and education aspirations.
▪ Pacific Kaiāwhina for families needing tailored support into other services.
▪ GP Outreach Clinic.
▪ Clinical and Cultural supervision and professional development.
▪ Pacific Elders health and wellbeing programme.
