Ruth Northway is Professor of Learning Disability Nursing at the University of South Wales, Pontypridd. Since 2019 she has also been an Adjunct Professor at University College Cork. A learning (intellectual) disability nurse by background she worked in a variety of residential and community settings prior to moving to work in nurse education.
Her research and teaching interests relate to the health and well-being of people with intellectual disabilities and ethical aspects of care and support. She also has a particular interest in working alongside people with intellectual disabilities to support their active involvement in all stages of the research process.
She has published widely and recently co-authored a new text relating to professional development in learning (intellectual) disability nursing. She was previously editor of the Journal of Intellectual Disabilities and Chair of the Royal College of Nursing Research Society and was recently a member of the Institutional Level Environment Pilot Panel in the recent UK Research Excellence Framework assessment. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales
