Woezo Africa Music & Dance Theatre Inc. presents Afro Urban Dance Workshops (AUDW) Vol 9: Hip Hop and Mbokalisation Kongo . A celebration & recognition of popular Afro-Diasporic dances that will allow you to delve deep in movements and education about African traditional, street and social dances contributing to the urban setting of Calgary.
Join us for our ninth installment of our AUDW series highlighting modern dance styles from Africa and the Afro-Diaspora!

WORKSHOP DETAILS:
Sho Tyme - Hip Hop
July 22 ~ 6 pm - 9 pm
Class description is: Understand the roots, experiences, and intricacies of Hip Hop from one who lives the culture. ShoTyme will guide the students in Styles of Hip Hop Grooves, basics, and foundations. Students will come away learning and understanding the creative use of Hip Hop vocabulary through the body, heart, and mind through the connection with the music.
Ajay (Jay) Musodi - Mbokalisation Kongo
July 27 ~10 am - 12 pm
Class Description: Journey through the sub-genre dance style coming out of the Northern region of Congo we will be exploring MBOKALISATION a lifestyle, music genre and driver of popular social dances in the region - The genre directly influences many dance artists globally allowing us to draw connections from the past all the way to our present time. We will dive deeply into the unique techniques and approaches as well as developing phrases and sequences to better understand the language of the style.

NOTE: This is one of four AUDW that is happening in July. The other dates are July 13 and 20 and the guest dance artists are teaching Step, Vernacular Jazz, Traditional Jamaican Folk Dance and Tap.

Sho Tyme
Born and raised in Queens, New York, ShoTyme has worked on world stages, tours, videos, movies, commercials and TV shows with many major artists proving that he is capable of giving his creative movement to many artists and dancers across the US and Worldwide.
Sho-Tyme’s versatility as a dancer, choreographer, teacher and mentor along with his creativity and extensive knowledge of Hip Hop dance culture as well as other Street Dance styles has enabled him to choreograph and artistically direct for many top artists, such as Mary J. Blige, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z and Katy Perry, Shakira, Gwen Stefani, TLC and Aaliyah.
He also worked on the films You Got Served: Beat the World and Stomp the Yard, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, among others, and was a choreographer and judge on four seasons of So You Think You Can Dance Canada. With God’s mercy and grace it has allowed him to accomplish all these things and more. He looks forward to sharing his creative vision with you all.
Ajay (Jay) Musodi
Ajay (Jay) Musodi is an Artist who has been contributing to the Canadian Dance community for over a decade.
He has trained in various styles such as: Hip Hop, Ndombolo, Afro-House and creative movement. He has gained this knowledge from world renowned teachers in New York, Mexico, France, Kongo, Las Vegas, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary.
His credits include: receiving 1st Place at World Of Dance Las Vegas 2019, 1st Place Monsters Santa Clara 2019, Radix Oregon 2018 Top Scoring Jr Hip Hop Choreographer and 1st Place AE Vancouver 2018.

Aside from industry work Jay dedicates his time teaching in-school Cultural dance residency programs to schools Canada Wide and programs internationally. He does so with the sole purpose of spreading the infectious Social dance practices that help teach the importance of respect, self love and appreciation for our differences.
