Buxton Local History Society presents a fascinating talk by Trevor Gilman in the Ground Floor Gallery on Wednesday 27th November. Doors open at 7pm for 7.30pm start. Ends approx. 8.45pm. All welcome. Cost £3 on the door (no need to book). Free to BLHS members. Hot drinks on sale from 7pm.
About the talk:
Many Buxton people will be familiar with Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, two architects who set up their office in the Quadrant in 1895. The popular view is that they designed several Arts and Crafts houses in Buxton and then went on to design the first Garden City at Letchworth.
But this is only a small part of their story. They were in the forefront of moves to improve living conditions for ordinary working people, following on from the campaigning of William Morris and other enlightened Victorians. They helped to lay the foundations for our modern world – well designed housing, new towns, green spaces, planning law and building regulations. They directly influenced the design of millions of homes, and that influence can be seen today. Their work also spread to North and South America, and Europe.
Raymond Unwin was knighted for his work. Their legacy in Buxton was to influence the work of subsequent architects to leave us many of the fine houses that we see around us.
