Diatopos Art Centre presents the new solo exhibition by Paris Sergiou, titled Studiolo, curated by Daphne Nikita. Opening Friday 13 February 2026 at 7 pm.
Paris Sergiou’s recent work develops through a conscious return to the history of the image. His point of departure is not personal narration, but the study of paintings, photographs, and archival material that have shaped how form has been seen and understood over time.
History is approached not as a past to be reproduced, but as an active field of learning. In the studio, images are removed from their original contexts and reactivated through drawing and painting. This process does not seek revival, but displacement—using a step backward as a method for moving the image forward.
At this stage of his practice, historical knowledge functions as a tool for progress. The image remains open, resisting fixation within a single style, period, or identity. What emerges is not a commentary on the past, but an ongoing test of painting’s future, grounded in an understanding of its origins.
Paris Sergiou (b. 2004) is a visual artist based in Nicosia. He has presented solo exhibitions including Studiolo (2026) and Preconscious (2024) at Diatopos Centre for Contemporary Art, Nicosia; El Greco Meets Paris (2024) at El Greco Gallery, Limassol; a solo exhibition at Art Number 23, Innsbruck, Austria (2023), where he also carried out live painting; Shade Otherwise (2021) at AB Gallery, Paphos; and I Knew and I Will Know (2020) at ARTos Cultural and Research Foundation, Nicosia. His work has also been featured in group exhibitions such as I, The World Revolves Around Me (2023) at M A D S Gallery, Milan; Fragmented (2022) at The Holy Art Gallery, London; topikap.kato (2022, postponed from 2020) in Thessaloniki; and upcoming exhibitions at Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Egypt (2026) and Andart Gallery, Vicenza, Italy (2025), as well as international venues in Madrid and Spain. Sergiou has participated in virtual and projection exhibitions, including Ubiquity and Fluidity (2021) at The Holy Art, London, and I, The World Revolves Around Me (2022) at M A D S Gallery, Milan, and has taken part in residencies such as Centro Negra, AADK Spain (2023); Farm Studio, Rajasthan, India (2023); Art Number 23 Residency, Athens (2023); and Cyprus Painting Road Residency (2025). His work is represented by Diatopos Art Centre and is included in private collections across Cyprus and Europe.

Το Diatopos Art Centre παρουσιάζει τη νέα ατομική έκθεση του Paris Sergiou με τίτλο Studiolo, σε επιμέλεια της Δάφνης Νικήτα. Τα εγκαίνια θα πραγματοποιηθούν την Παρασκευή, 13 Φεβρουαρίου 2026, στις 19:00.
Το πρόσφατο έργο του Paris Sergiou αναπτύσσεται μέσω μιας συνειδητής επιστροφής στην ιστορία της εικόνας. Σημείο εκκίνησης του δεν αποτελεί η προσωπική αφήγηση, αλλά η μελέτη ζωγραφικών έργων, φωτογραφιών και αρχειακού υλικού που έχουν διαμορφώσει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο η μορφή έχει γίνει αντιληπτή και κατανοητή με την πάροδο του χρόνου. Η ιστορία αντιμετωπίζεται όχι ως παρελθόν προς αναπαραγωγή, αλλά ως ενεργό πεδίο μάθησης. Στο εργαστήριο, οι εικόνες αποσπώνται από το αρχικό τους πλαίσιο και επανενεργοποιούνται μέσω του σχεδίου και της ζωγραφικής. Αυτή η διαδικασία δεν επιδιώκει την αναβίωση, αλλά την μετατόπιση—χρησιμοποιώντας ένα βήμα προς τα πίσω ως μέθοδο για να προχωρήσει η εικόνα μπροστά.
Σε αυτό το στάδιο της πρακτικής του, η ιστορική γνώση λειτουργεί ως εργαλείο προόδου. Η εικόνα παραμένει ανοιχτή, αποφεύγοντας να εγκλωβιστεί σε ένα μοναδικό στυλ, περίοδο ή ταυτότητα.
