Celebrate the Māori New Year at Taranaki's iconic home of peace: Parihaka. Puanga Kai Rau Festival will once again be held at Parihaka Pā this June. Saturday, 8th June 2024 - please mark this date in your diary. We will light a fire, do some gardening and also enjoy the rising stars performing on the stage!Nau mai, haere mai!
Nau mai ki runga o Te Pūrepo ki te takitaki i a Puanga i te pae o te rangi. Ka mārewa ake ki te marangai te tohu nō te tau, e ruri nei i te tau, te maru o te tau.
We invite you on to Te Pūrerpo to witness the appearance of Puanga. The rising in the east above Taranaki maunga, signalling the year.
Ko te 8 o Hune: Kia piki ake i Te Pūrerpo i te 6am. Ka timata ki te karanga.
8th of June: Be on Te Pūrerpo at 6am. Te tikanga of the taki will begin with karanga.

1. Does this festival cost anything?
Kao (No).
2. Is it just a one day festival this year?
Āe (Yes), just the one day. A wānanga will be held on the Sunday focusing on mahi māra and regenerative agriculture. More details will be announced soon.
3. What should I bring?
Gumboots, warm clothes and raincoats are essential just incase, especially for tamariki and kaumatua. Don't forget a torch. Bring some gardening tools if you plan to help in the maara and instruments if you want jam around the fire.
4. Where should I park?
Please follow the direction of organisers. Park in the designated areas. Drive carefully - our kids are running and biking around. We encourage you to car-pool to reduce emissions.
5. What about food?
We are having a shared kai at the garden. Feel free to contribute.
6. What about alcohol?
This is a family-friendly, drug and alcohol-free event, e hoa mā! Smokers are asked to smoke outside and out of sight of our tamariki please. The māra is a smokefree environment.
