Research shows that multiracial youth experience higher rates of mental health challenges, such as depression and anxiety, compared to their monoracial peers. These youth are also less likely to seek support when struggling. Fortunately, supportive family environments and a sense of belonging to communities where they feel affirmed and validated can significantly improve their mental health and overall wellbeing. In this workshop, therapist Raina LaGrand will delve into this research and guide parents, teachers, and others who interact with multiracial youth on how to develop relationships and create environments where multiracial youth feel understood and supported.
About the facilitator: Raina LaGrand (she/her) is a somatic therapist, coach, yoga teacher, and educator whose expertise lands at the intersection of trauma, racial identity, and belonging. In her practice, Root to Rise Somatics, she specializes in supporting people with developmental and relational trauma, and offers additional services catered to the needs of mixed race adults and interracial couples. She also provides embodiment-based workshops and trainings for companies invested in emotional intelligence and social justice. Raina lives with her dog on occupied Anishinaabe land (Ypsilanti, Michigan, USA).
