In 1916, aircraft first began to use farmlands at Manston as a site for emergency landings and soon after that, it was established as The Admiralty Aerodrome at Manston, where a training school was set up to instruct Handley Page Bomber's.
Flt Sub Lt Wilfred Norman Cross RNAS, aged 18, died during a crash at Manston and he's buried at Minster Cemetery.
During the second world war, whilst the Battle of Britain was in progress, Manston was heavily bombed; at its height (August 1940) diary entries recorded a steady stream of damage to aircraft and buildings.
The station was also littered with unexploded bombs and the base personnel hid in the woods for a week.
Barnes Wallis used the Manston Airfield as a base. He tested his bouncing bomb on the coast at nearby Reculver, prior to the Dambusters raid.
