About this Event
Join us for an evening of songs (mele) and dance (hula) from and inspired by Hawaii. Hear the stories behind the instruments and dances of Hawaii.
Evy Mayer became interested in Hawaiian music after attending her first music and dance camp (Makahiki Hou) in Hawaii, in 1989. She started playing ukulele that year. Evy will be performing the song that she learned from Frank Hewitt at that camp, plus many others that were inspired by the Hawaiian Islands.
Chris Davis has played Hawaiian steel guitar for over 30 years. He studied with Grammy winner (the late) Stacy Phillips and co-wrote an instruction book with Stacy entitled "The Art of Hawaiian Steel Guitar Vol. II". Chris has played many Hawaiian shows and luaus in the Tri-State Area, He currently plays steel for the NYC-based hula Halau (school) Pua Alii Ilima and has been with them for 15 years.
Over the years Skye Randazzo was a professional dancer with the former Polynesian Dance Productions in NYC and has played many important Hawaiian shows and professional gigs in the Tri-State area. She grew up in Hawaii and has Hawaiian roots. We are fortunate to have her as a featured dancer. She will be teaching us a hula at the end of the program. If you feel like it, get up and dance.
