The Visual & Performing Arts Division of Gulf Coast State College presents Paradise Revisited by Michelle Jones. The rich, colorful paintings in the exhibit are inspired by the landscape of the Gulf Coast. Just like the Gulf Coast they are at once voluptuous and beautiful, secretive and confrontational. The beauty of the images draws you and leaves you bewildered. Jones uses these tensions to explore the ideas of chance and control, indulgence and restraint, permanence and the ephemeral.
Michelle Jones, is a native of central Mississippi. She received her BFA in painting from the University of Mississippi and her MFA from Massachusetts College of Art. After a decade in Boston, she returned to the South and now resides in Mobile, AL. Her recent solo exhibitions include Alabama Contemporary Art Center and Kentuck Art Center. She was recently awarded a 2024 Individual Arts Fellowship from Alabama State Council on the Arts.
The exhibit runs from January 26 to February 23, with an opening reception on the evening of January 26, 5:00p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Michelle will present a gallery talk during the reception. The work will be on display in the Amelia Center Gallery (AC 112). Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Friday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
