About this Event

Make Your Own Sustainable Mushroom Paper

Mushrooms offer an exciting opportunity as an alternative source for paper production. Creating paper from mushroom pulp closely resembles the traditional method of using cellulose fibers, making it accessible for those interested in exploring sustainable practices.

We’ll start with a brief introduction to the history and science behind mushroom paper, including what makes it different from cellulose-based paper and which mushroom species work best. You'll also receive helpful resources to continue exploring at home.

In this class, you’ll learn:

  • The basics of mushroom pulp and how it's made
  • Step-by-step papermaking using a mold and deckle
  • Techniques for drying, pressing, folding, and decorating paper
  • How to experiment with different textures, pulp mixes, and additives
  • Ideas and resources for continuing your sustainable craft journey

Feel free to bring along your own materials like flowers, leaves, or even paper with text to personalize your creation!

This course is designed for everyone, no matter your experience level.

Meet the Intructor

Roberta Trentin (she/her) is a Brooklyn based multidisciplinary artist who works in collaboration with the materials and the unknown outcomes. Her work explores overlooked stories of fungi, microorganisms, and plants in the more-than-human world. A background in science and a love of the earth result in an interweaving of macro/micro observations and deeply personal stories in her work.

Roberta received her Master’s Degree in Agriculture Science and Technology from the university of Florence, Italy before moving to New York City to study Photography in the General Studies program at the International Center of Photography. Roberta earned her MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from the NOMAD program at University of Hartford.
