By 1850 there were 13 paper mills in Baltimore County, and it was the predominant industry in the northern portion of the county. It started in 1775 when German immigrant William Hoffman built the first paper mill here. R. Carlton Seitz picked up his interest in the history of paper making in the county from research first started by his grandmother, May Albright Seitz. His book, featuring an introduction by the late John McGrain, was a great match for a limited hand-pressed run.
What is a "hand press"? For generations a hand press implied a printing press that resembled Gutenburg's press. Stephen Heaver's interest in printing books combines a manual press not unlike that style, types that are hand composed, ink and paper that are hand made, bindings that are also manually put together.
