Mark your calendars - The Papatowai Challenge is being held on Saturday 1 March 2025.The 28th Papatowai Challenge is a pre-season fun run and walk from a holiday home in the Catlins. It is signposted at the south end of Tahakopa River Bridge. Papatowai is located approximately two hours from Dunedin and one and a half hours from Invercargill. The Southern Scenic Route is now fully sealed.
The Papatowai Challenge is run over the measured distance of 15.5 km and is over a varied scenic course of well formed bush tracks, beach running, and local roads.
There's also the Papatowai Canter a fun 5km fun run taking in the bush track and beach component of the longer Papatowai Challenge.

Fastest times over the course are: 51m 31s (2012) by Dougal Thorburn of the Ariki Club, Dunedin and 1hr 00m 23s (2006) by Anna Frost of the Hill City-University Club, Dunedin.
Fastest walkers: 1hr 33m 56s (2013) by Roger Leslie of East Taieri and 1hr 41m 18s (2012) by Jennifer Love of Wanaka.
AID STATIONS AND MARKERS. Drinking water is available at 5 and 10 km approx. Course is arrowed for easy following and the last 9 km is marked at 1 km intervals. Toilet available at about 8 km.
PETS. Sorry, pets are not permitted on the course.
AFTER RACE FUNCTION. Light refreshments in a unique Papatowai style, followed by prizegiving at approx 3.30pm.

ENTRIES & FEES
Entries are open on Wednesday. Details will be posted on the Papatowai Facebook page and emailed to previous participants. Entry fee is $40 for runners and walkers.
ONLINE ENTRIES CLOSE ON THURSDAY 27 February. This year there are no entries on the day.
AWARDS
1st Male & Female Runners to finish receive a pair of running
shoes from Asics and Smiths Sports Shoes, Dunedin.
The overall winner is presented with the Papatowai Shield.
Other shields include:
• 1st Senior Male & 1st Senior Female
• 1st Veteran Man (40yr+) & 1st Veteran Woman (35yr+)
• 1st Masters Man (50yr+) & 1st Masters Woman (45yr+)
• 1st Legends Man (60yr+) & 1st Legends Woman (60yr+)
Walking Section: The overall winner is presented with the
Papatowai “Walkers Trophy”.
“Sports Person” of the day: Shield for outstanding services to the Papatowai Challenge.
NEW RUNNING COURSE RECORDS:
$1000 male and $1000 female who breaks the respective record. Special thanks to the Rayner Family, long time supporters of the event.
