**Papa Jack Couch and the Standard Electric Band live at Eddie's Attic!**“More than the tales of heartache, smiles, bad luck, and devotion to the Almighty, what gives weight to Papa Jack Couch’s songs of life … is the exquisiteness of his voice. Self-effacing humor and sweet grace find balance when he sings … and sets the tone for a series of portraits of everyone from petty criminals to antagonists with “manslaughtering eyes,” and the desperate people who love them.” (From a review by Chad Radford, Creative Loafing Atlanta)
“He sounds more weathered than weary … you can hear shades of Johnny Cash in his soft homespun twang. His voice may not be as grim and mountainous, but in some ways it’s equally resolute.” (From a review by Guillermo Castro, Immersive Atlanta)
It’s been only a few years since he emerged from Meriwether County by way of long years in Waycross, Georgia, to step once again into the musical spotlight. In his early years there were promising beginnings - encounters with Gram Parsons and Johnny Cash - but for most of his life his songwriting dreams had to be left untended. In 2016, widowed and feeling alone, searching for new beginnings, he discovered that the music had never left him.
For the next few years he worked his way into the Atlanta music community, finding other musicians he could respect and admire, until he was able to gather them in, and under the guidance of studio wizard Damon Moon they completed his first album, Meriwether in 2018. The group that came together worked so well that they’ve remained connected ever since, as the Standard Electric Band; Micah Cadwell on guitars, Matthew Wauchope on keyboards, Robert Green on bass and Mike Dana on drums. They’ve gone on to record two more albums full of Papa Jack compositions, Witness Tree and Handful Of Lovesongs, as well as performing together many times. They’re recording again together now, and hope to have an album completion date to announce soon.
Papa Jack has recently moved back to the US after two and a half years in Belgium, producing original music for Gospel outreach. Before leaving the US, back before the lockdowns, his touring universe was beginning to expand into New York, New Orleans and Nashville, but Atlanta is once again his home base.
The three albums are all online everywhere. A series of voice and guitar video recordings of Papa Jack’s songs, produced in Europe, can be found at youtube/in het echt/ Playlists/Jack Couch.
