DetailsThe cliff top walk from Bethells Beach (Te Henga) to south of Muriwai Beach reveals one of the most stunning views of Auckland's wild west coast.
We will start from Bethells Road to the Te Henga Walkway which crosses the Waitākere River by footbridge. Track will rise along a graded section, to superb views of lagoons, dunes and the west coast surf down to O’Neill's Bay. We will continue along Te Henga Walkway, the track climbs steeply then follows along the cliff-top where you may see gannets diving for fish. The track exits through a farm valley and another steep climb to Constable Road. Care is needed on this track, which traverses coastal cliffs and is uneven and muddy in places. We will return the same way.
Duration: about 7 hours return including a few stops and lunch.
Distance: about 20.6 km
Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced due to the distance and duration. The track follows coastal cliffs and is rutted and steep in sections. It becomes slippery after periods of rain. Take care around old slip sites.
Long day hike, aiming to finish in 7 hours at moderate pace. Trail will be very scenic but training will be the priority so we will have less stops than usual. No drones pls.
As we have a big group, we will break into 2 small groups with moderate & slow(er) pace.

8:00 am - meet at Bethells Carpark by the toilet block
4:00 pm - estimated end
What to bring bring/wear:
- NO COTTON WEAR - jeans/denims/shirts/jumper please
- snacks, lunch and drink
- sturdy footwear suitable for tramping tracks (e.g. hiking boots)
- clothing suitable for Auckland winter
- sun and rain protection - good waterproofed/windproofed jacket
- first aid items + personal medication
- extra change of clothes and shoes + bag to put your wet/muddy clothes/shoes in.
- cash if carpooling
- gold coin donation
- positivity and fun
Transport:
Car pool fuel share is $15 cash, please pay directly to the driver. If you need a ride or are willing to give a ride, please comment below and indicate your location/space available.
Cost:
This is a free hike but a gold coin donation towards operating costs will be highly appreciated.
