ABOUT THE PANELISTS:
Set Gozo

She acquired a degree in Nursing from Purdue University in 1993 and a BS in Health Care Administration from Calumet College of Saint Joseph in 1996. She also studied photography and ceramics at Indiana University in 1997. She has been a resident artist at Bridgeport Art Center Chicago and the functional ceramic and figurative sculpture instructor at Chicago Ceramic Center since 2018. Her creations help her connect with her inner peace and her style of art is rooted in Filipino culture. She aims to expand her horizon in bridging and building a community of artists by sharing and exploring each other’s ideas and inspiration. Her work represents gratitude, and she's earnest in sharing the wonderful gift of art.
Zarina Docken
Driven by intellectual curiosity, Zarina uses art to investigate the grand, surprising, and often perplexing ways our world works. Born in Manila, her journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at the University of the Philippines. At the same time, theater's allure drew her in leading to playwriting, design, and acting. Immigrating to Chicago in the early 90s, she embarked on a career in technology before pursuing a Master's in Design at the IIT Institute of Design. Through vibrant layered washes, Zarina explores human connection and creativity, seeks to voice the language of mathematics, and puzzle over the oddities of worlds beyond sensory perception.
Abigail (Abby) Linatoc Mendoza
Abby is a second-generation Filipino American mixed media artist from the suburbs of Chicago, IL. A graduate of the MA in Art Therapy & Counseling program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Abby’s practice is rooted in positive youth development through the centering of lived experiences - particularly of marginalized, queer, Black, Indigenous, and young people of color. While they see themself as an artist first, Abby applies their training as a therapist in formal educational spaces such as conferences and higher education settings across the US while also facilitating in nontraditional spaces such as online workshops and open studios. Their artwork has been shown in galleries across Chicago, Wichita, Indianapolis, and Los Angeles.
Joan Klein
Joan was born and raised in the Philippines. Her family immigrated to the US when she's 14. She has a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from Woodbury University and has worked in several architectural firms in Maine, North Carolina and North Dakota. She has a passion for architecture, photography, screen printing, and the visual arts. Her inspiration comes from her Filipino heritage, her architectural background, her family and the beauty of everyday life.
