The History of Pancake Day
Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, has been celebrated in Britain for centuries as an important date on the Christian calendar. It marks the last day before Lent, the 40-day period of fasting during which meat, dairy products, eggs and fat were not permitted. Households would need to use up these ingredients quickly – and pancakes, made from milk, eggs and butter, were the perfect solution!
For the monks of Glastonbury Abbey, Shrove Tuesday would also have been a day of confession and absolution. To ‘shrive’ meant to confess sins to a priest, and a ‘shriving bell’ would be rung on this day to call people to church. Some churches today continue this tradition, with the ringing of what has become known as a ‘pancake bell’.
