About this Event
The day also known as the "Day of the African Woman", Pan African Women's Day is celebrated each year on the 31st of July. It is a day set aside to celebrate and honour the achievements of Africa's women and advocate for gender equality in Africa. It also represents the necessary initiative of building unity amongst African women both at home and in the diaspora.
The first Pan African Women's Day was commemorated on the 31st of July 1962 in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
Following this, the Pan African Women's Organisation (PAWO), Africa's first and oldest collective women's organisation was formed. PAWO, at its inception, was formed to contribute to the continent's liberation from colonialism, rally to bring an end to apartheid and advocate for the abolishment of all discriminatory practices against Africa's women.
The event is being co-sponsored by the Louisiana Organization of Refugees and Immigrants (L.O.R.I.) and the All-African Women's Revolutionary Union (A-AWRU). There will be presentations, poetry, children's activities (organized by the African Student Association of Southern University) and African food representing parts of Africa and the diaspora. The event is free of charge and open to the public.
