Considered the leading composer of late-16th century Europe, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525–1594) had a lasting influence on the development of both religious and secular music in the late Renaissance — and also far beyond. As composer of more than 100 surviving settings of the Latin Mass and 250 motets, his output is undoubtedly one of the greatest in the history of music for the church — and, as a testament to his stature within the Roman Catholic tradition, he was entombed in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome upon his death. Join The Emmanuel Choir for a program centered on this master’s stunning polyphonic output — including the famous and transcendent Missa Papae Marcelli — as we mark five centuries since his birth.
