Soul Sunday, hosted by Debra James Tucker continues with Paisha Thomas and her band paying tribute to the music of Mavis Staples. Paisha enjoys exploring the sacred and the secular through gospel, country, soul, funk, rock, and roots music just like one of her greatest inspirations - the inimitable Mavis Staples! Mavis and the Staple Singers have made a grand impact on American music in various ways, including social justice movements. We have also witnessed Paisha making a similar impact here in Ohio through her music and projects like Say it Loud Columbus - Music for the Movement, which she co-founded in 2020 during the global protests for ending police violence against Black people in the US. Join us as we celebrate this special tribute to Mavis Staples by Paisha Thomas and her band! The unique sound of vocalist Debra James Tucker is a product of extensive training in jazz, classical and gospel music. Her new album is “Voices”, which continues her exploration of early black church forms in contemporary contexts. She is the writer/performer of the one woman show Survival of the Boulevard Singer—winner of an Ohio Arts Council Award for Individual Excellence, has been a visiting instructor at Denison University in the history of African American Gospel Music, and an artist in residence with several youth arts organizations.
