Painting with Microbes: ASM Agar Art Contest

Microbes are the cornerstone of the biotechnology revolution, but can you also consider them beautiful? Join Genspace to participate in a hands-on activity designed to highlight the wonders of the microbial world! In this hands-on event, you'll learn how microbes can be engineered to produce eye-pleasing images and novel materials. Genspace will provide colorful or fluorescent microbes that you can paint on your own agar 'canvas'!

NOTE: This event is Family Friendly: youth ages 5-16 may attend with parent supervision and youth ages 16+ may attend without parent supervision.

COVID-19 Safety Notice: Participants age 5+ must show proof of full vaccination (we recommend using the Excelsior Pass). Masks are required to be worn for the duration of the event when indoors. If you are feeling unwell, suspect that you have been exposed to COVID-19 or test positive, please do not attend and cancel your order ASAP. You can find a list of symptoms and a self-checker tool on the CDC website. Upon entry, all new guests are required to and show a vaccination card and sign in/out for contract tracing.

If you have had COVID-19 within the past 15 days, a negative PCR or Rapid test is required before coming to Genspace. Please show Genspace staff your proof of negative test results. Julie Wolf (she/her) received her Ph.D. in Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology from the University of Minnesota and did her postdoctoral fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. As a research scientist, she studied the ways that microbes adapt to different areas within the human body to cause disease. She has also worked in science communications for the American Society for Microbiology and is currently a biotech investor. You can find her talking about biotech and science on twitter.
