Join Claudia Berumen for a fun and creative workshop celebrating alebrijes, the colorful, fantastical creatures from Mexican folk art! These whimsical animals are handcrafted and painted with bright patterns and imaginative designs. In this hands-on session, we will decorate our own alebrijes while learning about the history and magic behind this beloved handcraft. For this workshop we'll be using traditional copal wood alebrije figures for adults, and larger plywood alebrijes for children. Enjoy pan dulce from a local bakery and agua fresca while you paint.
Member adults $35, non-member adults $45, children 12 and under $15. For ages 6 and up, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited, so register online today: https://tickets.sbnature.org/events/49dc023a-0736-078f-0553-b54251cd982b
Instructor is bilingual and ready to support Spanish-speaking participants by request.
About the Instructor
Claudia Berumen is a first-generation Mexican-American, born and raised in Santa Barbara, CA, with family roots in Zacatecas and a heart deeply rooted in community. She is a cultural worker, creative, and workshop facilitator who brings warmth, tradition, and joy into every space she holds. With over a decade of experience in human services and a strong foundation in trauma-informed care and servant leadership, Claudia now co-manages Alebrije Talleres y Tesoros—a family-run home and garden shop she runs alongside her husband from Oaxaca, celebrating the richness of Mexican artesanía and culture. Through her workshops, Claudia invites people of all ages to heal, create, and reconnect—with their creativity, their comunidad, and themselves.
