Special Event: The Ian Keil Memorial Lecture:Tuesday 22nd April, 7.00, All Saints Parish Church:
Professor Ronald Hutton on ‘Pagan Goddesses in
Christian Europe’
Pagan Goddesses in Christian Europe
‘Professional historians are agreed that ancient paganism itself did not long survive the official conversion of
Western Europe to Christianity. They are divided over how far it is possible to suggest that features of the old
religions survived within Christian culture. This talk makes a fresh contribution to the debate, by looking at
superhuman figures in medieval and early modern Christian Europe who do not seem to be survivals from ancient
paganism but have nothing Christian about them either. It suggests that we need a new language to discuss Europe
in these periods.’
Ronald Hutton is Professor of History at Bristol University, Gresham Professor of Divinity at London, and a
Fellow of the British Academy. He is the author of nineteen books and ninety-five essays on different aspects of
history.
