About this Event

The Pacific Climate Justice Exhibition will showcase Pacific artists and youth across Auckland engaging in storytelling, mixed media expression, and photography. The Pacific Climate Justice Exhibition will amplify Pacifika and Māori voices within our community through diverse creative expressions and mediums. This can include sculpture, poetry, spoken word, weaving, music, dance, art, and painting. This event is brought to you by Pacific Vision Aotearoa, Auckland Council Climate Catalysts, and the Onehunga Community Recycling Center.

The event will engage with intergenerational storytelling and how we are intrinsically connected to the environment and have an obligation to lessen our impact on the world. It will look at accountability and a share collective responsibility for our futures, connecting Pacific communities as well as creating a platform for all communities throughout Auckland to learn, engage, and hear the stories and to know more about climate justice.

Pacific communities feel and have felt the impact of climate change and will also be the most impacted, which is why it is important to amplify Pacific voices, youth, elder, and intersectional perspectives in order to genuinely confront the impacts of our actions. There is also colonial underpinnings and roots in Aotearoa’s Pakeha history and being a good ancestor also means confronting what our own ancestors have done to get us to this point now and how we can heal our ancestral wounds.

We are partnering with the Onehunga Community Recycling Centre (CRC), the first Māori/Pasifika-operated Community Recycling Centre. “This community hub will focus on reuse, repair, repurposing, and upcycling while reducing carbon emissions and creating local jobs and training opportunities in the process. It will offer local residents a place where they can drop off their unwanted items and purchase second-hand goods affordably.” Our artists will be encouraged to create art out of recycled materials and to challenge themselves to find beauty and use for items by giving them another life cycle. Our event also provides skill-sharing and workshops on how to upcycle and foster creativity through sustainability.

Most importantly, we aim to work through, with, and for the communities and amplify voices that deserve to be heard.
