PABLO RIESTRA - Many categories - One language
Pablo Riestra, now living in Vantaa, Finland, grew up in Chile, where he studied contemporary art. He remembers a childhood in the shadow of the military dictatorship, where he and his family had to move and rebuild their life again and again in a new place.
Now Pablo uses painting as a way to confront self enslavement from the past, the present and the future, and takes inspiration from images on social media, from portraits to landscapes, in order to create new stories for himself. Using oils and acrylics in intense and vibrant colours, distorting certain shapes and volumes of the objects, he interprets the images and gives them a new life and meaning.
In his own words, to describe the exhibition and his art, Riestra says: "The fusion of Pop Art and Japanese Art is the common language of my paintings. It also has the colours my grandmother and great grandmother used in their respective crafts, fabric painting and crochet. It is a language of joy I have created for my friends, family and people yet to come.”
