Pretty tunes and dirty hands, The Tiger Lillies perform for Paavli.LIVE on the 21st of November! The Tiger Lillies don't "do" dark cabaret; in fact they made a room for it and then refused to put the curtains back up. Martyn Jacques' falsetto doesn't sit on any given melody, it interrogates it. The accordion squeezes air out of the room, the bass nudges your balance just a half a step off and the theremin is like a an empty shaft at 3 a.m. — someone's there, you just can't see who.
The Tiger Lillies doesn't do songs as much as they do scenes: tiny moral plays about the people we direct our gaze away from: the saints, the degenerates, piety and filth sharing a table. Think Brecht if he'd written at 03:17 in Soho with makeup on his collar and the breath of cheap whisky fuming from his mouth. One moment it's a chanson pretty enough to trick you, the next it's a confession offered to the wrong listener.
Nothing truly 'evolves', and perhaps that is the point of The Tiger Lillies. Avoiding the chase of eras, or polishing the edges, they simply are what they are, an atmosphere where jokes have teeth and sorrow has a spine.
