If we previously described Nicolas Chkifi as meditative and hushed, 𝗣𝗮𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗶𝗹𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻-𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲 is best known for ferocious blows to the snare drum. But also – and more importantly – for creating space, listening, and responding in the moment.
A Circus that far surpasses the circus, then. The music of Ethiopia, Brazil, Mali and Senegal resonates through a sextet of extraordinary improvisers. South African vocalist Juliana Venter forms the dramatic core. What begins as carefully composed material is cracked open on stage. Any band member can launch any fragment at any moment. The result is explosive and unpredictable, no concert alike. A circus of imagination.
