Registration for Fall 2025 is now open!
Berks History Center (BHC) is pleased to continue offering in-person and online classes that explore the language and culture of the Pennsylvania Dutch.
Enrolling in a Pennsylvania Dutch class at the BHC offers a fun opportunity for students to enjoy the fellowship of other Pennsylvania Dutch enthusiasts, but more importantly, it allows an opportunity to celebrate and preserve this rich cultural heritage.
Currently, BHC offers three different course levels. All classes are eight weeks in length. Classes cost $90 for BHC Members (Individual Level Members and Above) and $175 for Non-Members. Participants can become a BHC member by signing up online at berkshistory.org/membership.
Classes start the week of September 15th, 2025.
Our three course levels are as follows:
~BEGINNER~
Our beginner course is perfect for students with little knowledge of the language, or for more experienced speakers who would benefit from a review. The beginner course introduces students to vocabulary, common phrases, and very basic grammar. Tuesdays (Online) 7PM to 8:30PM; OR Wednesdays (In-Person at BHC with Keith Brintzenhoff) 3PM to 4:30.
~INTERMEDIATE~
Our intermediate course is ideal for graduates of the beginner course or for students with a basic understanding of the language. This course features less discussion of culture and entails a deeper dive into grammar and vocabulary. Mondays (Online) 7PM to 8:30PM; OR Wednesdays (Online) 7PM to 8:30PM.
~ADVANCED~
Our advanced course builds upon the Intermediate Course, continuing the deep dive into grammar and vocabulary. Tuesdays (Online) 7PM to 8:30PM.
Note: The textbook required for Intermediate and Advanced level courses (Schwetz mol Deitsch! by Douglas J. Madenford and Joshua Brown) is available for purchase from the BHC’s Museum Store. BHC Members receive 20% off, and Non-Members enjoy 10% off this and all other PA Dutch language books.
