WORKSHOP Learn how to grow your own native oyster mushrooms (in preloved containers)
Join me for a mushroom 101 workshop and learn about and try your hand at growing nz native oyster mushrooms on a shoestring (carbon) budget at home! No special tools required.
Growing healthy food is usually associated with a garden, but this isn’t always a reality for everyone. This course teaches you a way to grow natural food from garden or foraged waste materials and set up a mushroom production in your laundry, garage, porch or even your room.
The three-hour session includes materials and instructions guiding you step-by-step through the process of setting up a 2l ice cream container with NZ native oyster mushroom. At the end you will walk away with the skills and confidence to create and grow your own mushroom boxes or buckets at home!
The first half of this skills-focused, hands-on workshop will be learning about mushroom biology and cultivation, which mushrooms you can easily grow, what materials are best to use, and what to look out for along the way. Then you will work through each step of the process - from preparing the container, the substrate material, how to assemble, and how to care for your mushroom container!
What to bring:
- a clean 2-litre plastic ice cream container with lid (for your container)
- scissors and box cutter knife
- a refillable water bottle (to stay hydrated)
- a notebook and pen for taking notes (if you like)
- a snack (if you need/like)
If possible, participants are also encouraged to bring:
- power drill (cordless is easiest)
- drill bits, size 6, 7 or 8
