Oxford Pagan Moot - History and Development of Tarot - April 2025

The Oxford Pagan Moot is a monthly informal pub meet for those with an earth-based spirituality (druidry, wicca, witchcraft... etc) or an occult based practice (Golden Dawn, OTO... etc).
It is a relaxed, safe space for those that wish to meet people locally with similar interests, share your interests, or learn from others. All are welcome to attend, whether alone or with a friend. Those with 20+ years experience and those that are new to their path are equally welcome.
Many have requested an informal workshop or learning space, as well as a desire to keep up to date with upcoming events. To address this but still keep with the informal, relaxed style we will set out a new format:
7.30-8.00pm - Socialise, introductions and grabbing some drinks.
8.00pm - Talk or Demonstration:
The History and Development of Tarot. Talk given by Robert Mealing
Let’s explore the history and development of tarot cards. Together we’ll look at what we know about the invention of the cards, how they were originally used and how they spread across Europe from the 15th century onward. We’ll start by looking at the early Italian decks and then focus on the iconographic changes that occurred as patterns developed, changed and spread across counties, with a special emphasis on the development of the Tarot de Marseille and similar decks. You’ll learn what we know about the development of tarot as well as what we don’t know, and yes… there are still quite a number of mysteries associated with these decks, just from a historical perspective alone. You’ll leave with a richer understanding of possible meanings of the cards and we’ll discuss some methods that might be used to read with these decks based on systems much older than the later tarots like the Rider-Waite-Smith deck that so many modern decks are based upon.
9.00pm - Open announcements for anyone who wishes to share something, mention an upcoming event, have something they'd like to give away or swap, request a discussion or event for another time, etc. We will do this round-table Style where everyone is welcome to add something if they wish, or hide!
9.30pm-onwards - A gentle invite for people to move next to people that they haven't met yet. Then informal, social chats and discussions may resume.
Oxford's pub moot will be held at the marvelously atmospheric pub, The Royal Oak. The Royal Oak serves both food and drink, so we should be nicely catered to for an evening amongst friends - new and old. Food is usually served until 9pm.
If you have an interest, or something you wish to share, feel free to bring it along.
If this is your first moot, or you need a bit of support, feel free to reach out to Paul or Amanda on Facebook. We can help you feel a bit more confident in meeting us. We are usually here earlier if you want to meet us first.
