About this Event

About this event:
Join us for an insightful seminar with Professor Jonathan Crook from the Credit Research Centre at the University of Edinburgh Business School. This seminar will explore an extensive study into the factors that influence an individual's likelihood of becoming overindebted.

Using data from over 25,000 individuals collected between 2018-2020 from the UK’s Wealth and Assets Survey, Jonathan Crook investigates the roles of financial literacy, risk attitude, and time preference in predicting the probability of overindebtedness. This research is novel in its examination of the direct relationship between risk attitude, time preference rate, and overindebtedness, providing critical insights with practical implications for financial decision-making.

Programme:

1) Coffee & Tea with cakes to prepare for:

2)~45 minute seminar

3) Q&A

4) Offline networking & drinks reception

Key Findings:

  • A higher level of financial literacy affects the probability of overindebtedness.
  • Surprisingly, individuals with a higher risk aversion, except the most risk-averse, are more likely to become overindebted.
  • Those with higher time preference rates, who value immediate rewards over future gains, are also more prone to overindebtedness.

This research stands out not only due to the larger sample size compared to previous studies but also for correcting potential sample selection bias to make significant inferences about the adult population.

Who Should Attend:

  • Academics and researchers in finance and economics
  • Financial industry professionals and policymakers
  • Anyone interested in personal finance, financial literacy, and consumer behaviour

Funding Acknowledgment:
This research was partially funded by the Leverhulme Trust under the Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship Scheme Grant No: EM/2021-068\7.
