About this Event

The Outhouse Book Club returns on Wednesday, 17 April 2024 from 6-8pm in the Outhouse Library when we take on (drumroll, please!)… Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic.

Title: Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic

Authors: Alison Bechdel

Format: Graphic novel; 242 pages

Summary:

Fun Home is a 2006 graphic memoir by the American cartoonist Alison Bechdel. She was the author of the 1985 comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For, which introduced the Bechdel test, a set of criteria to determine gender bias in works of entertainment that is still used today.

In Fun Home, Bechdel charts her fraught relationship with her late father. Interweaving childhood memories, college life, and present day, Bechdel looks back on her complex relationship with her father through a fiercely funny and heartbreaking narrative and finds they had more in common than she ever knew.

In 2013, Fun Home was adapted into a musical, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2015. The musical played at Dublin’s Gate Theatre in 2023.

Where can I find copies of this month's book?
As this is a graphic novel, we recommend getting a physical copy. It's available to order online and in bookstores ranging in price from €10-€18.

Don’t forget, Outhouse LGBTQ+ Centre will also have a copy of the book in the library, and you can also look to borrow from your local library if you'd rather not buy the book.
