Join our Outfall Safari training day to learn how to spot and report river pollution, helping to protect and improve our local rivers.Pollution can enter urban rivers through surface water outfalls (drains), often as a result of misconnected plumbing. This is a frequently overlooked source of pollution that can cause long-term, chronic damage to our rivers and wildlife.
Outfall Safaris are bankside surveys that aim to locate and assess surface water outfalls, helping to identify polluted discharges so they can be investigated and remediated. By taking part, you’ll play a direct role in improving the health of local rivers.
This training event will equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to take part in Outfall Safari surveys.
Who can attend:
You must be 18 or over to attend
Please only register if you intend to take part in surveys and can attend the training session in person
Surveys can be carried out at any time during April–May, but must take place following at least 48 hours of dry weather, so flexibility is essential.
The training will include:
An overview of water quality issues along the River Wandle
Information on surface water outfalls and how they become polluted
Guidance on assessing outfalls using the project apps and uploading data to the database
A health and safety briefing
This is a practical opportunity to develop survey skills, while supporting action to improve our local rivers. Together, these surveys help turn evidence into action to protect our rivers.
