About this Event

Outdoor Odyssey: Snowshoeing for Beginners

Outdoor Odyssey (formerly known as Becoming an Outdoors Woman- Utah [BOW]) is hosting a snowshoeing and winter glamping adventure for beginners on February 18-19 to introduce adults (18+ years old), especially women, to basic snowshoeing in a positive and empowering environment.

Join us for an exciting snowshoeing excursion in Beaver County! We will learn some basic winter safety skills as we snowshoe approximately 2 miles to a rustic cabin where we will stay overnight and enjoy the thrill of being unplugged for 24 hours. (There is no electricity at the cabin.) The next morning, we will practice our skills as we snowshoe back to the trailhead. Grab a friend or just plan to meet new friends and get ready for an unforgettable adventure!

When: Wednesday, February 18 - Thursday, February 19, from approximately 7:00am-7:00pm

Who: Adults, especially women (18+ years old) - No experience necessary

Where: Big Flat Guard Station in Beaver County, UT. We will meet at the USU Extension Office in Washington County at 7:00 am and carpool to Beaver, where we will stop at Tucker High Adventure Tours to meet our guide and grab our snowshoes. (If you are travelling from somewhere besides Washington County and would like to meet in Beaver, please reach out to Andrea at [email protected] to make arrangements.) We will drive to the trailhead and snowshoe to the Big Flat Guard Station (approximately 2 miles). We will be returning to Washington County around 4:00 pm. (Please note that times are subject to change, so please keep the day flexible.)

Cost: $130 - The fee includes:

  • transportation
  • snowshoe rental
  • instruction about snowshoeing and winter recreation safety
  • lunch, dinner, breakfast, and snacks
  • overnight stay in cabin (amenities include vault toilet adjacent to cabin and woodburning stove inside cabin)
  • an opportunity to be unplugged and to enjoy the company of others who may be trying a new adventure

What you need to bring:

  • an adventurous attitude, a willingness to make friends, and courage to try new things
  • wear clothing appropriate for the activity - warm pants (snow pants or water-resistant pants, no jeans), warm base layers, warm snow jacket, gloves/mittens, warm socks (wool or other wicking material, ski socks are great), warm beanie, good winter boots (boots are available for rent if needed)
  • 1 extra change of clothes
  • minimal toiletries -just the basics that you might need for one night
  • headlamp/flashlight with spare batteries
  • large day pack to carry food and clothing
  • warm sleeping bag - we will coordinate a drop off before Feb 18 and have our guide transport the sleeping gear to the cabin via snowmobile so we don't have to pack it in
  • water bottle
  • favorite snacks (optional)
  • sunscreen
