Out to the Cosmic Web: Structures of the UniverseThe solar system seems huge – the distance to Neptune, the furthest known planet, is about three billion miles. But that’s nothing compared to the distance to the nearest star, Proxima Centauri, roughly 4 light years or twenty-five trillion miles.
After that, things get really big. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is about 100,000 light years across, with each light year equal to about six trillion miles. And the Milky Way is part of the Local Group of galaxies, which is about ten million light years across. After that, things get immense…
How immense? Come to this presentation at the Morrisville library to learn about structures in the universe that reach billions of light years in size and distance, ending with the Cosmic Web, essentially the overall structure of the universe as we understand it today.
Presented by the Lamoille Star Gazers.
