"Out of the Ashes: Remembering the Forgotten Jews of Czarny Dunajec, Poland"Shoshana Roitman z"l, was one of the few Jews from the town of Czarny Dunajec, Poland to survive WWII. After the war, several of the few Jews who survived, upon returning to their former homes, were murdered. And for decades subsequently, the small town's Christian population mostly acted as if there had never been a Jewish presence there. The town's primary synagogue became a town dump, and the town's Jewish cemetery became a W**d infested lot whose former gravestones now were used as patio stones in the town's residential backyards.
Until one non-Jewish man Michal Szaflarski, asked his father - a town historian - why there were Jewish artifacts in their town when there are no Jews.
That question, and its answer, led Michal to change the direction of his life. He researched the town's Jewish history. He cleaned up the Jewish cemetery, providing new grave markers and signs noting the site's history. He brought Jewish leaders to the former synagogue, to lead Jewish prayers and songs in that building once again. He created a website detailing the town's Jewish history: About the author - The history of the Jews from Czarny Dunajec (jewishczarnydunajec.pl)
And using social media, he virtually assembled from around the world surviving relatives (mostly children and grandchildren) of the Jews of Czarny Dunajec, introducing many of them to one another.
One of them is Eti Bardack, a long time member of Tifereth Israel.
Michal will be in DC briefly and has agreed to speak at TI on Shabbat afternoon, October 5 at 1:15pm.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear a truly moving story and remarkable speaker. If you would like to learn more about this Shalem program or have questions, please contact Paul Bardack at [email protected].
