About this Event
For 35 years Kim Wilkie has been a landscape architect. After reading history at New College Oxford, he obtained an MA in Landscape Architecture from the University of Berkeley, California.
As illustrated in the pair of photographs above, Kim draws inspiration from the geology and water flows of the earth, combined with the Bronze Age traditions of sculpting the land, to create new landscapes from old.
Kim Wilkie’s work extends from the V&A and Dulwich Picture Gallery to a dozen new towns across England. Nearby examples of his designs have made Broad Street Oxford, the memorial of Hyde Abbey Winchester, and the garden of Gilbert White’s House in Selborne what they are today.
Kim's work has received professional awards from the Royal Society of Arts, from the Royal Institute of British Architects, and an honorary degree from the University of Winchester.
Of immediate interest, Kim is currently being consulted to help integrate the proposed new towns planned by the government, to ensure they fit properly into the landscape where they are to be sited. As his book puts it, we should be "Led by the Land"
The OUS Autumn Lecture is an occasion when the Society is addressed by a leading specialist on a subject we can all appreciate. Kim Wilkie’s contributions to the visual attraction of Hampshire matter to us all.
