The Boulder Junction Public Library and Boulder Junction Area Historical Society are partnering to present OurStory: a Monthly History Series. Programs will share “OurStory” - highlighting a local history topic or area of interest that helps us remember the past, understand how it impacts our present, and preserve these memories for the future.
Join us for “Dr. Kate: Angel on Snowshoes” on Thursday, September 25 at 7pm at the Boulder Junction Community Center. Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb, who is remembered as the "Angel on Snowshoes" for her dedication in reaching patients when the winter roads were impassable, played a vital role in the history of Wisconsin's great Northwoods. Dr. Kate practiced medicine in and around Boulder Junction and Woodruff, WI.
Marsha Doud and Barb Maines, from the Dr. Kate Museum and Historical Society in Woodruff, will be sharing the story of Dr. Kate, the history of Woodruff, how the Lakeland hospital began, and the story of the Million Penny Parade.
Barb Maines is the President of the Dr. Kate Museum and Historical Society. She is a graduate of District One Technical in Eau Claire with a 2-year degree in Secretary Science. She was named Dr. Kate Woman of the Year in 1991 by the Dr. Kate Business and Professional Women. She worked in the Howard Young System for 42 years with her recent retirement from the Howard Young Foundation. Barb also volunteers for the Lakeland Pantry Bear Cupboard Run, the Lakeland Star Autism Golf Tournament, and the Minocqua Dragon Boat Festival.
Marsha Doud has been a Volunteer Curator of the Dr. Kate Museum and Historical Society since 1989 and serves on the Board of Directors. She is a UW-Stevens Point graduate in Elementary Education. She is a former AV-W School Board member and a life-long resident of Woodruff. Marsha and her mom co-authored the book “Woodruff Album” which is available in the museum.
This free program is sponsored by the Boulder Junction Public Library and the Boulder Junction Area Historical Society. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call the library at 715-385-2050.
