About this Event
Academic and writer Corinne Fowler discusses her ground-breaking study of the legacy of colonialism in the landscapes of the British countryside, Our Island Stories, with Zakia Sewell.
Rural places in Britain, while integral to our national identity, are rarely seen in the context of a history of colonialism and Empire building. Fowler, through a series of walks through the British countryside, presents a history of place that deepens our relationship with the shapes and stories of Britain’s beloved landscapes.
Corinne Fowler is Professor of Colonialism and Heritage in Museum Studies at the University of Leicester. Between 2018 and 2022, Fowler directed a child-led history and writing project called 'Colonial Countryside: National Trust Houses Reinterpreted'. She also co-authored the 2020 National Trust report on its country houses' historical links to the British Empire. Her most recent book isGreen Unpleasant Land: Creative Responses to Rural England's Colonial Connections.
Fowler will be in conversation with Zakia Sewell. Sewell is a broadcaster, writer and DJ from London, and host of the Breakfast show on NTS. The event will be followed by a book signing. Doors will open from 6:45pm.
