About this Event
The first Convict Settlement, at Sydney, consisted of about 850 convicts and their Marine guards and officers, led by Governor Arthur Phillip. They arrived at Botany Bay in the "First Fleet" of 9 transport ships accompanied by 2 small warships, in January, 1788. In these harsh conditions, Timberlake Wertenbaker sets her, now iconic play that is part redemption tale, part love story, part allegory for the British Pr*son Education System, and most importantly, a championing of the power of theatre.
What starts as a brutal exploration of crime and punishment in 18th century Australia, soon becomes a heartwarming tale of humanity and triumph in the face of sadistic authority; and ends with one of the most uplifting conclusions you're likey to see in contemporary theatre.
Warning: Contains some upsetting scenes and infrequent strong language.
